Public spaces make safe, vibrant and connected communities.

Round two of the Healthy Communities Initiative still accepting applications

As Canadians continue to adapt to the realities of COVID-19, local governments and community partners across the country are adapting their spaces and services to keep residents safe and healthy, support economic recovery, create jobs, and build vibrant, resilient communities.

With the first round of the Healthy Communities Initiative closed, community foundations have been able to provide local leadership in a pan-Canadian initiative to create safer, more vibrant and inclusive communities. Community foundations have been working alongside our partners who are experts in building vibrant, equitable and livable public space. The Healthy Communities Initiative partners include the Canadian Urban Institute, 880 Cities, Park People, Vivre en Ville, MaRS, Canadian CED Network, ICLEI, the Network for the Advancement of Black Communities and the National Association of Friendship Centres.

Our Golden Horseshoe Hub are supporting projects that will create safe and vibrant public spaces, improve mobility options and provide innovative digital solutions to connect people and improve health.

Starting from May 14, 2021, visit healthycommunitiesinitiative.ca to see the Healthy Communities Initiative projects being funded from coast to coast to coast.

The Healthy Communities Initiative generated significant interest across the country and  communities have shown creativity and resourcefulness in proposing projects that enable people to connect and access public spaces safely. The first round of the Healthy Communities Initiative was highly competitive. As communities continue to see the impact of the pandemic, we received over $300M in funding requests for Round 1.

Community Foundations of Canada were unable to fund all eligible applications, given that funding is limited. Community foundations and Community Foundations of Canada made funding decisions based on the relative strength of all applications received according to the program wide evaluation criteria.
